From the early days of Islam, Arabic – the language of this universal revelation, Al Quran, was believed to have a sacred nature, for indeed Quranic Arabic is the most sophisticated Arabic that will ever exist. Hence, a study of the language of the Arab/Islamic culture and civilization which affected almost every aspect of our modern life and had far reaching influence on the development of various fields of knowledge; Mathematics, Algebra, Astronomy, Medicine, Physics just to name a few, becomes a matter of paramount importance, especially in the times we live in, as it is the Arabic language that has been the means of transmission and preservation of Arab and Islamic identity, value systems and practices since the time of Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings upon him. Many words we learn as speakers or students of Arabic will have deep rooted cultural and or spiritual significance behind them and it becomes for the seeker, a real joy to explore those cultural gems of meanings and wisdoms alongside learning the Arabic language.

The course will also provide an exposure to the colloquial Egyptian dialect. Students while learning to speak and express themselves in simple one-to-one conversations in colloquial Arabic, will also be exposed to Islamic Sufi wisdoms and Prophetic traditions that govern daily interactions in middle eastern countries and hence provide the context for instruction and introduction to the Arab culture. While so doing, students will be exposed to grammar rules, sentence structure, will acquire an extensive vocabulary of over 800 words and expressions that will help them communicate effectively with natives or speakers of the Arabic language. The splendor of Islamic calligraphy, that highest form of Islamic art, will visually introduce students to the intricate geometry and grandeur, that muslim calligraphers apply to the art of writing the words of God and the sayings of Prophet Muhammed, peace and blessings upon him. Hence students will learn, not just to write, but to write beautifully in naskh script while getting exposed to other beautiful scripts in the realm of exquisite Islamic calligraphy. Films, songs, books, museum visits, Islamic Calligraphy and active daily conversations in Arabic in addition to assigned homework and readings, will help immerse the student into the Arab culture from day one, and within a few classes, students inshAllah, God Willing, will be well on their way to understanding, speaking, reading and writing beautifully in Arabic.
